Carbon offsetting provides no absolution from climate sins

Airlines’ touting of green measures that reduce the climate impact of flying, such as carbon offsetting and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), amounts to greenwashing according to consumer groups, who have submitted an official complaint to the European Commission and national regulatory authorities over what they say are deceptive trade practices.
At this stage of the climate crisis, there is an unnerving schism between those willing to take extreme measures to rein in emissions – glueing themselves to roads, disrupting fossil fuel company meetings, defacing works of art – and those who remain defiantly dismissive of the threat posed by unchecked climate change.
