New report on ‘Energy retrofit, repair, maintenance and improvement of homes’
A new report, ‘Energy Retrofit, Repair, Maintenance and Improvement of Homes in Great Britain: Towards a Sector Skills Strategy’, has been produced by researchers from the Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford, and Nottingham Trent University, and commissioned by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) in partnership with the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).
The report provides the evidence base for the UK’s first Sector Skills Plan for Housing Retrofit and Repair, Maintenance and Improvement (RMI). It examines the skills, governance and workforce challenges facing the construction sector as it transitions towards delivering healthier, more energy-efficient and resilient homes.
The research highlights the importance of viewing retrofit and repair, maintenance and improvement (RMI) as interconnected activities rather than separate markets. With RMI representing around £41 billion of construction activity each year, the report argues that delivering high-quality retrofit at scale will require a stronger focus on competence, quality assurance, coordinated policy and long-term workforce development.
