THIS IS AN IN PERSON AND ONLINE EVENT

Summary: The ESO (Electricity System Operator) published a plan called “Beyond 2030” in March 2024. This plan outlines an ambitious investment of over £58bn in transmission infrastructure up until 2030. The goal of this plan is to connect approximately 85GW of offshore wind capacity and facilitate the transition to a zero carbon electricity system. The seminar will delve into the background, decision-making processes, outcomes, and future steps related to achieving a zero carbon electricity system, which is a crucial component of the future net zero economy.

Speaker: Dr Paul Wakeley is the Head of Strategic Network Development for ESO. He is accountable for the future development of the GB Transmission System, in developing recommendations about what network investment is needed, where and when, to ensure the transmission system facilitates the transition to Net Zero through low carbon generation, in a secure and affordable way. His team is also leading work on the Centralised Strategic Network Plan which will transform network development processes to ensure they are future fit, and reflective of the whole energy system of the future. Paul has worked at the ESO for over twelve years in a variety of teams across Networks and Markets, and before that worked in consultancy. Prior to that Paul obtained his PhD at the University of Birmingham in Applied Mathematics.
