Summary: Last year nearly 200 countries at COP28 in Dubai agreed to a powerful package of energy commitments – the UAE Consensus – to help keep the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 °C alive. These included tripling renewable energy capacity, doubling the rate of energy efficiency progress, significantly reducing methane emissions and a historic pledge to transition from fossil fuels in a just, orderly and equitable manner. Coming straight after the 2024 meeting of COP29 in Baku in November, this seminar will discuss the latest developments on how the world is moving to implement the promises made in Dubai.

Speaker: Dr Nicholas Howarth is an Energy Economist in the Energy Markets and Security Division of the International Energy Agency (IEA).  He has led three Energy Efficiency Market Reports – the flagship publication of the IEA’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Inclusive Transitions and has worked closely supporting the historic doubling efficiency pledge made at COP28 in Dubai.  He is an experienced policy advisor with an international perspective having been based in many countries including Australia, the United Kingdom, the European Union, China and Saudi Arabia. He received his D.Phil. in Economic Geography and M.Sc. in Environmental Change and Management from Oxford University and has a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Adelaide, Australia.
