Summary: Over the past decade, the fusion energy landscape has transformed dramatically, driven by scientific breakthroughs, technological innovations, and an influx of private investment. This paradigm shift has ushered in a new epoch, marked by unprecedented public-private partnerships and a shared ambition to bring commercial fusion to reality within a decade. In this seminar, Dr Pearson will explore the current state of play, addressing the systems challenges ahead ranging from technical hurdles to scaling investment. He will also discuss how Kyoto Fusioneering is unlocking fusion’s potential, driving the sector forward with their unique business model, and will detail key projects that position them at the forefront of this global energy revolution.
Speaker: In 2019, Richard Pearson co-founded Kyoto Fusioneering, a company with a mission to progress global fusion by commercialising advanced fusion technologies, including plasma heating systems, tritium fuel cycle technologies, and breeding blankets for tritium production and power generation. As Chief Innovator, he oversees the company’s strategic partnerships, supports technology-to-market development, and handles stakeholder engagement and communications. Richard holds a PhD in Fusion Engineering and Innovation from The Open University and an MSc in Nuclear Engineering from Imperial College London, where his expertise is in innovation management, commercialisation of fusion technology, and tritium supply. An accomplished public speaker, he delivered a TEDx talk in 2022. He is also a visiting researcher at the University of Bristol and serves as Field Editor for Private Fusion & Commercialization at the Journal of Fusion Energy.
A keen cyclist, in May 2024 Richard cycled from Land’s End to John O’ Groats over just 9 days, raising money for the Ruth Strauss Foundation in memory of his late mother.
