Summary:  In this talk, Prof. Jesus Lizana will present the latest research from the ZERO Institute at the University of Oxford on zero-carbon heating and cooling. The talk will examine the role of the building sector in achieving net-zero targets by 2050, drawing on new evidence from citizen-powered climate observations and projections to understand future shifts in heating and cooling demand. It will also showcase Oxford’s recent innovations in materials, software, and technologies to accelerate heating decarbonisation, alongside advances in sustainable cooling to support global climate adaptation. The presentation will discuss the key steps required to deliver resilient, net-zero building services worldwide.

Speaker:  Jesus Lizana is Associate Professor at the University of Oxford, with a background in architecture and engineering. He leads research on Zero-Carbon Heating and Cooling at the ZERO Institute and teaches Building Services Engineering in the MEng and MSc programmes at Oxford. His work focuses on heating decarbonisation, sustainable cooling, and climate risk, combining materials innovation, modelling, and real-world testing. He has an international and interdisciplinary career, with professional and academic experience across Spain, Portugal, Germany, and the UK. He has contributed to over 20 national and European research projects, regularly advises international organisations including UNEP, DESNZ, and CIBSE, and actively collaborates on industry consultancy projects worldwide.
